Is Haven an emergency service?
No. Haven is not an emergency service and does not replace 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. For crisis support, call or text 988. Haven's SOS button is built to connect a teen with a licensed counselor quickly, and to hand them to 988 or 911 when no counselor can answer.
What happens when a teen taps SOS?
Every counselor who is on duty and signed in gets an alert at the same moment. The first counselor to accept takes the call, and everyone else sees that it was taken. If no counselor accepts within 45 seconds, Haven shows the teen one-tap options to call or text 988, and to call 911 if they are in immediate danger.
Is SOS really free?
Yes. The SOS button and the 988 / 911 hand-off are free for every teen, whether or not a parent has a paid plan.
Who are the counselors?
Only counselors with an active North Carolina license, such as Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) and licensed clinical addictions specialists (LCAS). Counselors apply, and an admin checks each license against the state board's public lookup before they can take calls. Associates must practice under supervision.
How does a parent set it up?
A parent creates the account, verifies their contact details, chooses a plan, adds their teen, and signs a written consent form. Haven then gives the parent a short link code that the teen types into Haven on their own phone or tablet. The teen needs no password.
What can parents see?
Only that a session happened, when it started, and how long it lasted. Parents never see what was said. If a counselor believes a teen or someone else is in danger, the counselor follows North Carolina's safety and reporting rules, which can include contacting a parent or emergency services.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is not set yet. The plan is a monthly family subscription paid by parents, with SOS always free. See the pricing page.
Where is Haven available?
Haven is planned to launch in North Carolina first, because counselors must be licensed in the state where the teen is located. It is not available to the public yet.
Is there an app I can download?
Not yet. Haven is an early prototype. You can join the waitlist and we will email you when there is something to try.
Is my information protected?
We are designing Haven to collect as little as possible and to keep session content private. Haven handles sensitive information, so a health-law attorney will review the privacy policy and consent forms before launch. The current privacy page is a draft, and this website does not use cookies, ads or analytics.
Are calls recorded?
Voice calling is not built yet. Whether calls are recorded will be decided with legal advice and stated plainly before launch.
Can adults use Haven?
Version one is for teens ages 13 to 17, set up by a parent. We plan to add support for adults, including counseling for substance use, later.
